Dear Loved Ones All,
This week has been mostly spent on the phone making assignments for the Ward Christmas Dinner next week. The Bishop didn’t want to leave it to the “sign-up” method. I made soup for Monday evening and invited the Westergards down for FHE. It is nice to have another “imported” Sr. Couple living here that we can kind of just invite over spontaneously. Their assignment used to be MLS missionaries, but they have been the car and referral missionaries in the office since the Andersens were released.
I got a call from the new mother asking us if we could come over and see if we could figure out why her sewing machine wasn’t working. I figured if it was complicated Elder Macbeth would have to work on it, but it turned out that she just had the bobbin in upside down. So threading it properly made it work perfectly. We continue Mary’s Kitchen every Wednesday but this week we also served an extra day on Tuesday. The lady in charge of running the kitchen on our day was asking us all if we would take a turkey left over from Thanksgiving. I ended up with a huge pre-cooked turkey that was frozen. The elders each took a raw bird and if I had known there was a choice I would have too. Have you ever tried to work with a frozen 20+ pound turkey. I had to thaw it out enough to take the legs off to even get it in my fridge and of course I did not have any space in the freezer compartment. Anyway, I ended up making a turkey dinner and inviting the Westergards down again. They were thrilled since their Thanksgiving Day dinner appointment was cancelled.
I repaired the temple dress for one of our sisters assigned to our ward. Both of them were transferred out of our area so we have a new set. As usual I have problem pants waiting for me to fix, but I have had to wait because my foot pedal developed a short so I have been waiting for the part to fix it. In the mean time I get more of them all the time. I think elders are much harder on their clothes.
We were able to catch up to several inactive members this week. One of the best tender mercies, miracles actually, was that we were able to make an appointment by phone. Then as we went to see them, there was a car pulling out of a space right when we were trying to find one. That particular street never has parking and there is nothing even close where we could park and walk. And finally, when we finished there we were able to visit another member who lives just a few apartment complexes down the street.
On Thursday for out District Meeting for the Christmas Event Kickoff: worldwide Day of Service, we made some sack lunches with PBJ’s, water, breakfast bar, and an orange, to give out to any homeless that we might come across while out and about. We had 7 lunches to hand out. We took one to a woman who has made her home (shopping carts piled high, tarps and blankets spread over bushes, and a lawn chair) under a tree in front of the Von’s Grocery Store. When I offered her the lunch she looked at it and at me, wrinkled her nose, and refused to accept it. So much for our first attempt. After giving out a couple to some non-members, one final place we tried was a park where we discovered some people who were happy to have food. Life is an experience for sure.
On Saturday morning we helped clean the Loara Building. Then we helped the Sisters print their program for their baptism scheduled for later, which we also attended for a mother and her daughter in another ward. That afternoon our district went to a park to show the new Christmas video and hand out pass-along cards about it. There were some that were willing to watch, and others who would go out of their way so as not to come by where we were set up. People are interesting, all they would have to do is say “No thank you,” and it would not hurt our feelings. In the evening I made some turkey noodle soup to take to some of the sick members of the ward. They were very appreciative. That makes me happy when what you do matters to someone.
While I was waiting for Ward Council, the Elders’ Quorum president saw me out in the hallway and told me he had brought me a 6 ½ foot tree to put up in our apartment. It apparently was one that came with the house they bought. (The house was a short-term rental before Anaheim passed a law making that illegal which goes into effect in about a year, baring the law suits pending against it from people who have had rentals for a good while.) So I had him put it into our back seat. After a wonderful Fast and Testimony Meeting, Sunday School, and Relief Society/Priesthood, I visited with those who were staying for the First Presidency Christmas Broadcast and the singles Break the Fast Potluck while Elder Macbeth took care of his Executive Secretary duties. By the time he was finished, it was time for the broadcast so we just went into the chapel to enjoy it on a BIG screen. J The messages were awesome and very timely and we were glad to see that President Monson was there even though he did not speak. Concluding a day of spiritual feasting we went home for a dinner of leftover turkey. Then Elder Macbeth put up the tree. We were disappointed that there were some of the lights that did not come on. Thankfully it is only half the size of my tree back home, so we will deal with it on Monday. Then I just have to figure out decorations.
If you haven’t watched the new Christmas Video I encourage you to do so. Have an awesome week.
Love, Sister and Elder Macbeth Go! Fight!! WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
