Dear Loved Ones All,
This week seemed crazy busy, but it didn’t seem like we were able to see that many in-actives on our list. We did all the normal things, laundry, cleaning, phone calls and texts, except the “dropping in” to see if our people were home. We went to see our people in the hospital which takes much longer because of the distance. We added another but he was in the hospital only a couple of days, although to see him it cost $6.00 for parking unless you are gone for less than 20 minutes, which is impossible to accomplish by the time you find a place to park, walk clear over to the front doors, check-in and find the elevators and the room. I repaired 4 pair of pants and a suit coat. After we were ready to leave from serving at Mary’s Kitchen a van pulled up with 5,000 eggs. We helped fill every available space in their refrigerators but there were still 60 cartons of 2 dozen each left. The temperature was hovering around 90-100 degrees so they asked everybody that could to take eggs for themselves and for anybody else we could think of. Elder Macbeth allowed me to take 4 cartons. We stopped at the mission office and gave out 3 of them (1 carton each for our elders, the truck elders, and the Westergards) and I brought the other one home because I use quite a few for all my cookies. The only problem was we had just bought 4 dozen eggs. I asked our Sisters if they would like some but they only wanted a dozen. I ended up making more “Smiles“ so that I could take some to our R.S. Enrichment Night. We were supposed to take a Halloween food. I renamed the cookies “ghoulish grins” and had Elder Macbeth print me a sign that read “Warning! Consumption of ghoulish grins may lead to spontaneous smiling and could produce tendencies for uncontrolled eating of sweet little things.” It was a fun night.
Elder Carl Cook of the Seventy came to tour our Mission. That means we basically did Zone Conferences with him and his wife. We were divided into 2 groups. We met on Friday, but we helped Elder Wong serve lunch on Thursday. He is so amazing. He grills both chicken and steak for every zone conference. Cooks rice (white and brown) and makes a salad. Sister Heathcoat makes cookies or brownies for dessert. He has decided that I can mix the dressing into the salad because unlike the “Relief Society Sisters” I use my hands. They are most efficient when working with such a large amount. I also am allowed to add the teriyaki sauce to the chicken after he has chopped it into bite sized pieces with his cleaver because again I use my hands. I must say that Friday was just like going to General Conference. President and Sister Taggart gave wonderful messages as did Sister Cook. But the high lights really belonged to Elder Cook. He complimented us, encouraged us, and instructed us. I will let Elder Macbeth add some of that if he has a minute, but I do want to share a couple of his stories. You might remember this one. When he was a newly called General Authority and feeling the weight of his new responsibilities, he was riding the elevator down in the church office building, loaded with papers and his brief case and just looking down staring at the floor when someone else got on. He didn’t look up until he heard a voice asking him what he was looking at. Of course he recognized President Monson’s voice and of course he immediately looked up sheepishly and said “Nothing.” But President Monson didn’t let it go. He bent down and looked at the floor too and said I don’t see it, what is down here? Of course by then Elder Cook is saying it was nothing…Finally Elder Monson looked at him and pointed up saying, “It is better to look up, Elder Cook.” Another experience was not long later when he had a weekend that he didn’t have a specific assignment but he was “On Call.” Well he told his wife to go with him to get some sod that they had been waiting to lay, figuring that they would have all of Saturday to put it down. They had just arrived home when he got a phone call that he needed to substitute for one of the general authorities that was supposed to be at a stake conference in Oregon the next day but was ill and couldn’t go. Elder Cook looked at all the sod laying there, and thought, “I can’t say, well, I have all this sod and it is going to take me all day tomorrow to lay it down and I am rather busy, so how about another time?…No, say I will of course be thrilled to go do that.” So he called his secretary to arrange an early flight to Oregon. Then he looked at his wife and at the sod, and wondered how it was going to get done when his first son walked up and said, “Dad, what can I do for you.” Of course Elder Cook said “Help lay this sod.” Then his second son just happened to drop by with the same question. He whipped out his cell phone and called his Teacher’s quorum president and soon there was a whole crew laying sod. It was finished by 8:00 o’clock that evening. He told us that we get many blessings for obedience, some quickly, and other not as quickly. Anyway, the conference was one masterfully presented thing after another. We also helped with the lunch on Friday because two of our Senior Missionaries were in the hospital so their spouses were with them and the Westergards needed to stay in the office, so we and the “Just Serve” missionaries helped Elder Wong with lunch.
Saturday after visiting our hospital members we got to go do sealings at the Temple with three other couples. One couple had not been back since they went to the temple for the first time last October. He was a police officer and was injured in the line of duty and has had to have multiple surgeries because of his injuries, so he is still recovering. After our session we went out to eat at the Panera. Delicious, fantastic company, and an all-around pleasant excursion.
I could probably fill another page, but I have more things to do so I’ll end. Hope your week is wonderful. Make sure you let your families know how much you love them. We love you all!
Love, Sister and Elder Macbeth Go! Fight!! WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! J
