Just wanted to share some cute pictures of the latest members of our family. The mama & baby on the top is from this afternoon. The baby was born just minutes before we got there to feed. The baby was standing up when we got there, but got worn out and laid down for a little rest. The mama was pretty nervous about us being so close to her baby, so we couldn't get a good picture, but oh well. She actually charged me when I got too close, so I backed off and gave them some space. The cow and calf standing is from yesterday (Jan. 3) and the mama is a first time mother. Both are doing well.

These first three were born on Christmas day and the day after. They are so fun to watch frolicking and jumping around the field. Calving season is the best time of year!

I know I'm a city girl, but I thought baby animals were born in the spring, you know, that whole Easter thing?? Those babies are going to freeze to death in cold UT!
mmmm, veal
They're tough. They are equipped with warm coats and warm milk. When the calves are born earlier, that gives them more time to grow before they go to the auctions in the fall. But December/January is pretty early. We're changing up our breeding program so that next year they will come Feb/March.
thanks for posting and getting that picture of my bruise off the blog list! Cute cows, by the way!
So, you sell "members of your family" to be eaten?
